The MEC for Education in the Western Cape, David Maynier, announced that his department will be able to appoint up to 1143 teachers in 2023, in a statement on Thursday, 4 August.
1143 NEW TEACHING POSTS FOR WCED
Maynier said the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) could make the announcement after completing the first part of its stakeholder consultations for the year.
“Last month, I met with stakeholders as part of the Annual Consultation process according to the provisions of the Employment of Educators’ Act, and shared the news that the Basket of Affordable Posts for teachers will be increased by 1143 posts for 2023.
“This increased allocation will allow for the appointment of up to 1143 additional teachers to the current staff of the Western Cape Education Department,” said Maynier.
The introduction of more than 1100 new teaching posts is significant and could push the number of educators in the province to 36 417.
For comparison, in 2022, the WCED added just 300 posts, while back in 2016 the basket increased by six posts.
The distribution of the 1143 posts is yet to be finalised. This will take place as part of the stakeholder consultation process. Schools will be told their teacher allocation for 2023 once engagements have been concluded.
Maynier said the additional posts are a much-needed boost to the provincial education system and it puts the WCED in a better position to expand learning opportunities and “deliver quality education in the Western Cape.”
“The extra budget allocation we received this year has made this increase to the Basket of Posts possible.
“Our principals, teachers, and staff are our greatest asset, and they are always willing and able to share their experience and knowledge with those joining our schools through our new post allocations,” said the MEC.
