Over the years, Orange Is The New Black star Laverne Cox has inspired many as a proud transgender woman and an LGBTQI+ advocate. Cox has made history as the first transgender Barbie doll.
The 50-year-old actress’ Barbie is part of California-based manufacturing company Mattel’s new diverse range of Barbie dolls, with dolls in different shapes and sizes.
NEW DIVERSE RANGE OF BARBIE DOLLS
The new diverse range of Barbie dolls, which was launched earlier this month, includes a Barbie doll with a prosthetic leg and a Ken doll with vitiligo, a skin condition caused by lack of melanin.
Speaking to Mashable, Lisa McKnight, the executive vice president and global head of Barbie and dolls and Mattel said it was important for kids to see themselves in the product and encourage inclusion.
“Barbie wholeheartedly believes in the power of representation and as the most diverse doll line on the market, we are committed to continuing to introduce dolls featuring a range of skin tones, body types and disabilities to reflect the diversity kids see in the world around them.”

“I hope that kids of all gender identities can look at this Barbie and dream.”
“I can’t wait for fans to find my doll on shelves and have the opportunity to add a Barbie Doll modelled after a transgender person to their collection.”
