‘The Abba Show – A Cinderella Story’ stars first male lead, queer surprise

The Mzansi Ballet’s The Abba Show – A Cinderella Story has been described as a “modern telling” of the much-loved classic, Cinderella. The show, currently showing at the Pieter Toerien Theatre at Monte Casino in Johannesburg, has its first male lead as Cinderalla and a drag artist who adds a queer spin to the story!

‘THE ABBA SHOW – A CINDERELLA STORY’

The Abba Show – A Cinderella Story is a stage production unlike any other. 702’s Bongani Bingwa described it as “Abba, meets ballet and A Cinderella Story.”

Award-winning drag artist Brendan Van Rhyn popularly known as Cathy Specific says audience members are encouraged to come dressed in their best Abba regalia.

“Dressing up is highly encouraged. We say dress up and show up and then about eight to 10 people in the audience who are really dressed up, have a chance to walk the red carpet to the ball.”

“They’ve got a chance to show off their finest. Depending on the winner, whether it’s a little one or an adult. They will be crowned at the end of it,” he said.

‘THE ABBA SHOW – A CINDERELLA STORY’ MALE CINDERELLA

Cape Town-based dancer Joshua Williams told IOL that he never thought he would get to play a princess, and be the first male in Mzansi to do so!

Having grown up in Atlantis, Williams said it was “not the very best place” to be flamboyant and expressive.

“I think my younger self would’ve been inspired to see a male dancer on pointe and in a tutu and crown,” said the 19-year-old dancer.

“And that’s a part of why I love doing this role, this is for my younger self but also for all the little boys out there, that they can dream and be anything they want to be and to hopefully inspire as well.”
