The five best matches in AEW history: 2019 – 2022

Since the genesis of AEW at Double or Nothing 2019, there have been some spectacular matches in the promotion.

Here I have selected the five matches that have been the best, in my opinion. Wrestling Observer Newsletter ratings

5 AEW Revolution 2020: The Young Bucks vs Page & Omega

It has to be said that this match will be number one for a lot of AEW fans, especially the die-hard originals.

If you like a lot of flips, this is also likely to be your top pick. However, even if you like your wrestling rough, ready and stiff as anything, you could still get a lot out of this match.

The Young Bucks are very good at what they do, and Adam Page and Kenny Omega are two of the best individual wrestlers in AEW.

This match is an important stop in the development of the stories of all four men involved and is a reference point for fans and pundits alike.

Wrestling Observer News rate this as the best tag team match ever.

4 Full Gear 2021: CM Punk vs Eddie Kingston

This match might be more down your alley if you’re into an all-out brawl from start to finish.

There wasn’t a whole lot of technical wrestling going on but this match had a great story that got you super invested in the outcome.

This contest let the world know where Eddie Kingston fits into the AEW picture as much as it showed as that CM Punk can still go.

3 All Out 2021: The Young Bucks vs The Lucha Brothers

The cage match to end all cage matches, this is perhaps my favourite tag team match to take place inside the steel (Why didn’t you just climb down from the cage Jeff!).

The clash of styles between these two teams engaged in a vicious war inside a steel cage is magnificent.

The Young Bucks leaned into their meanness in this one, showing critics they can be ‘serious’ wrestlers.

Best of all the Lucha Brothers won the AEW tag team titles for the first time.

2 AEW Rampage 2021: The Buy In: Bryan Danielson vs Minoru Suzuki

Believe it or not Tony Khan gave us this match for free and that probably bumps it up in my estimation.

So many influences go into making this match great but most of all it is made by the fact that Minoru Suzuki is a maniac and Bryan Danielson isn’t far behind.

They leather each other in a fashion that borders on the uncomfortable for a wild ride of a match.

1 AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam Bryan Danielson vs Kenny Omega

Bryan Danielson tells a great story in this match, planting seeds for the future development of his character and Kenny Omega is the best in the world.

The match itself was a slow-burner starting out at a deliberate pace with the intensity rising as it went on.

This is a match that lives up to the tag All Elite as two of the best professional wrestlers out there put on a show.

It has to stand among the best uses of the time-limit draw in professional wrestling story-telling.

AEW Battle of the Belts II will be the second event in the Battle of the Belts series coming to TNT Africa (DStv channel 137) from Saturday, 23 April at 10:50.

AEW Rampage premieres on SA screen’s on Saturdays at 10:00 while Dynamite airs on Sundays.
