‘Irrational’: Suspension of Tembisa Hospital CEO slammed

The Tembisa Hospital Institutional Labour caucus (ILC) has labelled the suspension of the health facility’s CEO, Dr Ashley Mthunzi as a desperate and irrational suspension orchestrated by Gauteng Premier David Makhura

On Friday, 26 August, Mthunzi along with Gauteng Health Chief Financial Officer (CFO) were placed on precautionary suspension to ensure their presence does not interfere with the investigation into allegations of improper procurement and payment of service providers at Tembisa Hospital.

In a statement, the Gauteng Premier said given the seriousness of the allegations and the possible link to the murder case of Babita Deokaran – former chief director of finance, exemplary public servant and courageous whistleblower who was brutally killed a year ago – the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has been appointed to investigate these allegations with urgency.

“We want all those responsible for plotting and carrying out the killing of Babita Deokaran to be brought to book. We want the corrupt in government and their cahoots in the private sector to face the consequences of their evil deeds,” Makhura said.

According to the caucus the suspension of Dr Ashley Mthunzi was implemented on the back of their demand to meet Makhura regarding attacks on the CEO and Tembisa Hospital.

The caucus reportedly also wished to discuss the deliberate silence of the HOD, Dr. Nomonde Nolutshungo and the MEC, Dr. Nomathemba Mokgethi, on media reports assassinating the character of the CEO.

The Institutional Labour Caucus spokesperson, Kansas Stevens, said Nolutshungo and Mokgethi’s deliberate silence kept the matter alive in public with a false version of events despite their knowledge of the true state of affairs on the issues.

Stevans said the ILC rejects the CEO’s suspension with the contempt it deserves.

“We continue to call on the department to engage labour on this issue, for the sake of labour peace and also, to ensure that the hospital continues to run smoothly.”
