‘You can run but you can’t hide’: Mashaba lauds arrest of Gupta brothers

ActionSA leader, Herman Mashaba has lauded the arrest of fraud and corruption accused Rajesh and Atul Gupta.

The Department of Justice and Correctional Services confirmed on Monday that the two brothers who were heavily implicated in the State Capture Commission were arrested in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Department of Justice and Correctional Services spokesperson, Chrispin Phiri said there are ongoing discussions between various law enforcement agencies in the UAE on the way forward.

“The South African government will continue to cooperate with the UAE,” Phiri said.

Taking to Twitter, the former City of Johannesburg Mayor who is very vocal about issues pertaining to fraud, corruption and other wrongdoings in government said one can run in life but they cannot hide.

In April, the Presidency released the fourth part of the State Capture Commission report which zooms on National Treasury, Eskom and the disastrous R1 billion housing project in the Free State.

Chief Justice Raymond Zondo found that the Guptas identified Zuma as someone they could easily use for their own advantage.

Zondo said central to the Guptas’ scheme of state capture was President Zuma.

“The Guptas must have identified Zuma at a very early stage as somebody whose character was such that they could use him against the people of SA, his own country and his own government to advance their own business interests — and President Zuma readily opened the doors for the Guptas to go into the SOEs and help themselves to the money and assets of the people of SA.”

Furthermore, Zondo said evidence heard at the State Capture Commission indicated that the Gupta brothers were in control of the Eskom board. He added that Jacob Zuma and his public enterprises minister Lynne Brown had been manipulating the situation at the power utility to advance the controversial family’s business interests.
