Big freeze continues: These SIX locations will be the coldest in SA tonight

A third night of sub-zero temperatures is set to send shivers through South Africa once more. The big freeze is predominantly occurring in central and eastern parts of the country, but a number of chilly outliers have been spotted elsewhere.

Big freeze goes into night three for South Africa

Rural locations in Free State may have to contend with temperatures approaching MINUS 10C, as clear skies pave the way for a frost-bitten forecast. Central and southern areas of the province will once again see the mercury plunge on Thursday.

It’s the early hours of Friday morning which see the temperatures reach their lowest, however. Before the break of dawn, the biting cold will bring icy conditions to parts of KZN, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, and even Gauteng.

Isolated frost patches are projected in the Western Cape, Mpumalanga, and North West. Meanwhile, our enclaved neighbouring nation of Lesotho is also braced for the big freeze, as thermometers could plunge to -7C in some parts.

Latest weather forecast for South Africa on Thursday 2 June

However, on this occasion, we’re simply looking at the domestic picture. We’ve scanned the latest forecast produced by Ventusky to highlight the six coldest spots in Mzansi, from the night of Thursday 2 June to the early morning of Friday 3 June.

We sincerely hope the people of Reddersburg are prepared to wrap-up warm…

    • Reddersburg, Free State: This rural town is looking at possible lows of -9C overnight.
    • Himeville, KZN: The mountainous region could experience bone-chilling lows of -7C within the next 24 hours or so.
    • Maclear, Eastern Cape: In the north-east of the province, the forecast is giving out -6C for the early hours of Friday.
    • Botshabelo, Free State: The well-populated region could also see the mercury plunge to -6C.
    • Kimberley, Northern Cape: The outskirts of the city are projected to see the temperature drop to -5C.
    • Evaton, Gauteng: The coldest temperature in the province is likely to be the -4C forecast here.
