BREAKING: Stage 2 load shedding to be implemented this week

South Africans should brace themselves for more load shedding as Eskom has announced it will be implementing stage 2 for the entire week, between 17:00 and 22:00. But the embattled parastatal has highlighted it may be forced to turn the lights off outside of these periods.

“Due to the continued shortage of generation capacity, Stage 2 loadshedding will be implemented from 17:00 until 22:00 throughout the week. While there may be instances where loadshedding might need to be implemented outside of these hours, as far as possible Eskom will endeavour to limit the implementation of loadshedding to the evening peak in order to limit the impact of the capacity shortages on the public,” said Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha on Sunday.

ESKOM CONTINUING WITH LOAD SHEDDING DURING PEAK HOURS

The power utility has been carrying out load shedding during the evening peak for more than a week as it struggles to meet the demand for power. Eskom had moved to reduce load shedding from stage 4 to stage 3 on Sunday morning from 08:00 until 16:00. This was followed by stage 3 until 22:00.

“Eskom will continue to closely monitor the system, adjust and communicate any changes as may be necessary. We appeal to all South Africans to help limit the impact of loadshedding by reducing the usage of electricity and to switch off all non-essential items”

    Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha

Mantshantsha says the utility currently has 3 028MW on planned maintenance, while another 14 992MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns.

“Eskom would like to remind the public that loadshedding is implemented only as a last resort to protect the national grid. We therefore urge all South Africans to continue using electricity sparingly especially between 05:00 – 09:00 in the mornings and 16:00 – 22:00 in the evenings,” he further said.
