Caught on TikTok! Hoërskool Rustenburg learners filmed ‘doing Nazi salutes’

Officials at Hoërskool Rustenburg in North West have been left horrified, after footage of their students performing a Nazi salute – while singing an old German war song on karaoke – was shared on TikTok.

In total, four pupils are believed to be facing ‘extremely serious’ consequences, after their ill-advised gesture shocked viewers. The North West Education Department is sending a team to investigate the matter further on Tuesday.

The scarcely-believable incident comes just days after a racism row erupted at Stellenbosch University. A black student had his belongings wrecked, when a white dorm-mate URINATED all over the room he was sleeping in. Thenus du Toit has since been suspended.

It’s not clear what the exact course of action will be for these troublesome teens, but it’s fair to say they will get the book thrown at them. A statement published by Hoërskool Rustenburg has expressed the institution’s shock and disdain:

Furious SGB response to Nazi salute controversy

Bernhard Visser is the Chairman of Hoërskool Rustenburg’s Governing Body. He admitted that the footage seen on TikTok is damning, and made it clear that ‘discrimination at any level’ would not be tolerated by the school.

“Accountable steps will be taken against four learners from Hoërskool Rustenburg who did a Nazi salute. The school governing body views the incident in an extremely serious light. These gestures are associated with the worst crimes against humanity.”

“The learners were taking part in a karaoke competition at the school when the incident took place, and a video recording of it is also doing the rounds. A disciplinary investigation is already underway, and parents have been notified.”

“Quality education can only take place in an environment where respect for others creates the space for everyone to grow and realize their potential. Discrimination at any level is unacceptable as it infringes on others’ space to grow.”
