Crowdfunder launched after young SA cricketer ‘savagely attacked’ in UK

Mondli Khumalo remains in an ICU unit on Tuesday, after he endured a horrific attack during a night out in the UK. The rising star has been capped at Under-19 level for South Africa, and he’s been plying his trade as a club cricketer for a Somerset-based team.

    Who attacked Mondli Khumalo?

Police confirmed that they have interviewed a suspect, and more lines of inquiry have already been launched. The information released about the alleged assaulter has been scarce, but here’s what we know so far:

    • The suspect has been identified as a 27-year-old male.
    • He is thought to have carried out this attack in the early hours of Sunday morning, around 3:00.
    • The man in question is understood to be local to the Bridgwater area of Bristol.
    • If prosecuted, the suspect will be charged with causing Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH).
    • Following a series of police interviews, he has been released from custody – but remains under investigation.

Mondli Khumalo latest: Surgery successful, induced coma remains

He is said to have undergone successful surgery on both Sunday and Monday, according to Club Cricket SA, with KZN Inland CEO Jason Sathiaseelan stating that they were aware of the incident.

The savage attack has shocked the local community, where Mondli Khumalo has become a much-loved part of the set-up. Bridgwater resident Chantelle Lawrence was so moved by Khumalo’s plight, she decided to set up a crowdfunding project in his name.

Crowdfunder created for young SA cricket star and family

Thousands have already been raised for the talented athlete’s family, who will use the money ‘to support Mondli in any way they can’. Lawrence has described the North Petherton player as ‘the nicest person you will ever meet’ – a sentiment shared by many Bristolians.

“Mondli Khumalo is a much loved member of the North Petherton cricket club were he is playing as their overseas professional.  He is the nicest person you will meet. He is currently in critical condition in the ICU.”

“Mondli is contracted by KwaZulu-Natal Inland and has been capped four times at first-class level. All the funds raised will go to Mondli and his family to be used however they need to, so please donate and help us help this wonderful young man.”
