The Buffalo City Municipality issued an urgent warning to residents in the following areas to be ready to evacuate to a devasting storm on Monday morning.
A STORM IN THE EASTERN CAPE WREAKED HAVOC ON MONDAY
“The Metro is issuing an urgent warning to communities to be on high alert and those in low-lying areas to evacuate as rains continue to persist.

The SA Weather Services (SAWS) has issued a level 2 yellow warning for disruptive rain for the Province, including Buffalo City, valid from Mon 08 Aug 00:00 until Mon 08 Aug 20:00.”

The Municipality furthermore said disaster management and human settlements teams were dispatched to several affected areas after strong winds and persistent rains blew rooftops and trees, flooded homes, and swept away shacks across the metro.

- Zone 12
- Zone 9
- Part zone 8 and 10

VARIOUS AREAS WITHOUT POWER
Eskom said on Monday that they are aware of the interruption of electricity supply to various areas in the Eastern Cape following a storm that passed through this morning.
“Our technicians are on various sites continuing to do assessments, closing breakers that ripped and doing repairs to restore the supply in areas where it is possible.”
Eskom said the following areas are affected by the power outage:
Ngqushwa, Cintsa, Willowvale, Centane, Ngcobo and Mthatha.
“We urge affected residents to be patient and to treat all electrical appliances as live during this time.”
Communities must not attempt to repair or be in contact with wires that are hanging as this is dangerous but rather report these.

“Our teams are following incidents pertaining to Ward 20, zone 8 Mdantsane where shacks are reported to have been washed away and some damaged by wind.
“In Macleantown, Ward 26, our disaster management teams are aware of several houses that have been affected with roofs blown off by last night’s strong winds.
“The Metro is issuing the alert with the history of 08 Jan in mind where flash floods displaced hundreds and resulted in nine fatalities.”

The Buffalo City Metro is also warning motorists on the road to exercise extra caution during these rainy and wet conditions.
“Our traffic officers are on standby together with our emergency services for road safety incidents.
“Our technicians are also responding to the several areas that are experiencing power faults in eQonce (Breidbach and Sweetwaters); in Mdantsane and in East London (Amalinda, Gonubie, Berea, Brayelyn, Dukashe, Beacon Bay, Stirling).
“With weather predictions saying there will be consistent rain throughout the day, we have emergency teams on standby for traffic, water, electricity roads and we are urging residents to report emergencies on our call center 0861113017 so that we can attend to them.”
