Five convicted of murder receive life sentences in Gqeberha

Five men convicted of murder have received life sentences in the Gqeberha Regional court on 21 November 2022, after the murder of a 55-year-old woman on 11 March 2018 in Motherwell.

Woman ordered to cover her face before being murdered

On 11 March 2018 at around 23:00, seven men entered a house in Mpheko Street in NU7 in Motherwell and broke down the door.

The owner of the house, who was disabled, and his wife were in bed at the time of the incident. They were ordered to remain in bed while the seven males ransacked the house and loaded their household goods into a red Toyota Avanza.

As Nosipho Sible Mabusela, 55, got up to investigate, two of the men returned and ordered her to cover her face and fatally shot her. Her husband who was lying next to her was not harmed.

Two accused arrested and others identified through fingerprint linkages

Upon hearing the shots, neighbours immediately contacted the police who arrived at the house while the suspects were still there.

Some of the suspects fled on foot while the others sped away in the vehicle. The vehicle was stopped by police and two accused were arrested, and all of the stolen goods recovered.

Some of the suspects were later identified through fingerprint linkages.

    Disability money motive for murder

The victims husband, Clyde Vukile Mabusela, 62, received a disability payout after he had became paralysed after a botched operation, and the motive for the murder was said to be due to this payout.

Control of the couple’s financial affairs and assets would be managed by his sister if his wife was dead. The couple had no children.

Clyde passed away before the trial was finalised.

Two suspects, initially arrested on scene, appeared in court on 14 March 2018 on charges of murder and robbery.

A third suspect was arrested around a week later in Kabega Park for illegal possession of firearm and was also positively linked to the murder of Mabusela.

During the course of the investigation, a further three suspects were apprehended.
One of the accused turned state witness and subsequently passed away during the trial.
