Five perish in separate accidents in Gqeberha

Five people perished in two separate accidents in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro, in Gqeberha over the weekend.

MOTORCYCLIST DIES AFTER COLLIDING WITH A COW

A motorcyclist lost his life over the weekend after colliding with a cow on the road. He was identified as Quinton van Jaarsveld from Kariega.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu said Van Jaarsveld was riding his motorbike on Friday around 19:00 on Rocklands Road. He was heading in the direction of Gqeberha.

“He then collided with a cow and unfortunately, died on the scene. A case of culpable homicide is under investigation,”

    said Naidu.

    FOUR PERISH IN HEAD-ON COLLISION

Meanwhile, in a second accident which happened around 22:50 on the R75 in Despatch, four people died in a head-on collision.

Colonel Naidu said the collision was between a truck and a Toyota Yaris.

“It is alleged that the Toyota Yaris was driving on the wrong side of the road in the direction of the oncoming traffic on the R75.

“The truck that was transporting lead, apparently warned the oncoming vehicle. The driver did so by flicking his lights. However, he could not avoid the head-on collision,”

    said Naidu.

Moreover, all four occupants (two males and two females) in the Toyota Yaris died on impact.

However, police managed to trace the family of one person, presumably the driver. Naidu further said the identity of the other three passengers is unknown.

Despatch police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.

They are also appealing to anyone who can assist in tracing the next of kin of the other passengers to come forward. They can contact SAPS Despatch on 082 441 7828 or 041 933 8000.

Alternatively, they can contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or their nearest police station.

CHILD SUCCUMBS TO INJURIES IN ACCIDENT

Meanwhile, a collision on the N4 in Equestria, Pretoria left a child dead and eight other people injured. The collision was between a light motor vehicle and bakkie around 20:00.

ER24 spokesperson, Russel Meiring said they responded to an accident and found a child had died and eight people were injured.

“ER24 arrived at 20:09 to find the light motor vehicle in the centre median while the bakkie was on the side of the road.

“Several patients were found lying around the two cars,”

    said Meiring.

He said on closer inspection, paramedics found that a child had already succumbed to his injuries. He was declared dead by the Provincial EMS.
