Gauteng: Three siblings DIE after eating POISONED meat

Tragedy has once again struck the Gauteng Education fraternity: MEC Panyaza Lesufi’s office says two siblings from Kaalfontein Primary School and their one-year-old sister sadly died after consuming poisoned meat that was meant for rats.

“Gauteng’s Education MEC, Mr. Panyaza Lesufi, is shocked to learn about two more tragic learner deaths of a Grade 1 boy and Grade 2 girl from Kaalfontein Primary School and a one year old non-schooling girl child that were all siblings and unfortunately passed away on Tuesday, 31 May 2022,” said spokesperson Steve Mabona in a statement.

Mabona says when the two children were at school, their grandmother sprinkled poison on meat and placed it inside a container on top of the fridge. The intention was to later use the poisoned meat to trap rats. The grandmother then left for church.

“Back from school, learners gained access to their grandmother’s rat bait and consumed it. Upon arrival from church, the grandparent found the children watching TV, until she realized that the container she left on top of the refrigerator was now in the sink”

GAUTENG EDUCATION SENDS CONDOLENCES AFTER LATEST POISON INCIDENT

The Gauteng Department of Education says the siblings confirmed to their grandmother that they had eaten the poisoned meat. The children soon complained about experiencing stomach cramps and were given milk by their grandmother. They were subsequently taken to a medical facility where they were declared dead.

Panyaza Lesufi has expressed condolences to the family, community as well as Kaalfontein Primary School.

“The Gauteng Department of Education has dispatched its Psycho-Social Support Unit to the school to offer counselling to the school. The services have also been offered to the bereaved family,” Mabona said.

The incident comes a week after three pupils from Ratanda in Heidelberg died. Their father had laced their energy drinks with poison and had also attempted to take his own life.
