The Hawks’ National Priority Violent Crimes Unit in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape arrested a “long-sought” suspect in Markman on Tuesday, 21 June.
HAWKS NAB WANTED SUSPECT
Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (Hawks) spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela said the suspect was wanted for allegations of attempted murder, murder and armed robbery.
According to the Hawks, police received a tip-off about a group of men who were allegedly on their way to hijack and rob a courier vehicle on 19 March 2021.
The suspects were travelling in a convoy of two vehicles and the authorities spotted them in the Peddie area and a high-speed chase ensued.
“A shootout ensued between the suspects and the police while suspects were fleeing in their vehicles,” said Mgolodela.
One of the suspects fell to death after slipping off the back of the bakkie being used to evade the police. Another suspect was arrested on the spot and one managed to flee the scene.
The wanted man was finally arrested on 21 June after the police received a tip-off about his whereabouts.
The Hawks spokesperson said Eastern Cape head Major-General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya was relieved by the arrest.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Port Alfred Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 23 June.
