It has been learnt that a confidant of the late Zulu monarch, King Goodwill Zwelithini and his son King MisuZulu, was assassinated on Saturday evening, 17 September 2022.
According to SABC News, 76-year-old Dr Dumisani Khumalo was accosted outside his home in Nongoma, Kwazulu-Natal, after returning from taking part in the contested annual Zulu reed dance at eNyokeni palace. The public broadcaster says Khuamalo’s death was confirmed by King MisuZulu’s spokesperson, Prince Thulani Zulu.

WHO WAS DR DUMISANI KHUMALO?
Dr Dumisani Khumalo, a senior member of the Osuthu royal council, was close with the Zulu Royal Family and even came to King MisuZulu kaZwelithini’s aid during the fight to take over his late father’s throne after his rival, Prince Simakade’s bid to wear the crown.
Khumalo leaves behind two wives and four children.
According to IOL, the current King relied heavily on Khumalo for advice, including on performing specific rituals, one of them being the entering of a sacred royal kraal which was performed last month.
King MisuZulu’s coronation is scheduled to take place on 29 October 2022. The road to victory wasn’t easy for the King, as several members of the royal family fiercely challenged his ascension to the throne.
AmaZulu princesses Ntandoyenkosi Zulu and Ntombizosuthu Zulu-Duma had even applied to urgently interdict King Misuzulu kaZwelithini’s pre-coronation ceremony, but this was struck off the roll.
Judge Thomas Ncube of the High Court in Pietermaritzburg made the decision about the pre-coronation ceremony which was underway at the time. Lawyers for the two princesses requested that the court interdict the premier so no further public funds were used. President Cyril Ramaphosa’s legal representative Advocate Marumo Moerane argued that there was no urgency in the application.
