    Mother dies in a freak accident in Cape Town stationery shop

    A mother of three has died after a store structure fell on top of her while she restocked stationary in a Cape Town shop.

    THE MOTHER DIED IN THE FREAK ACCIDENT ON THURSDAY

    According to reports, the freak accident occurred in the Typo shop at the Tyger Valley Shopping Centre just before 13:00 on Thursday.

    The 41-year-old mother, Jihaan Orrie, was reportedly assisting another staff member in packing the store’s contents for relocation to a new site.

    She had worked at Typo for the past 14 years and was a regional manager.

    IT IS BELIEVED A SHELF OR CUPBOARD FELL ON TOP OF THE MOTHER

    Jihaan, from Thornton, was buried on Friday in accordance with Islamic rites.

    She is the mother of three children aged 21, 16 and seven.

    Sadly enough, Jihaan became a widow during the Covid-19 pandemic.

    HER HUSBAND DIED LAST YEAR DUE TO COVID

    Her husband, Riyad Orrie, died last year due to Covid-19. He was just 37 years old.

    Jihaan’s eldest sister, Carmen Claasen, told the Weekend Argus they were in a state of shock after the family had buried her husband, Riyad, just 15 months ago.

    She was one of seven siblings who had an immensely close relationship.

    Carmen described her sister as hard-working, loveable and vibrant.

    The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated.

    POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING THE CIRCUMSTANCES

    Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said the circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated.

    Tyger Valley Shopping Centre management reportedly confirmed the incident.

    Tyger Valley Centre general manager Tanya Heimann reportedly said emergency medical services were immediately called to the scene, but Jihaan, unfortunately, succumbed to her injuries.

    JIHAAN WAS DESCRIBED AS HARD-WORKING, LOVEABLE AND VIBRANT

    “We are deeply saddened by the passing of a much loved team member. Our hearts and thoughts are with the family at this time, and with respect to the family, we’re unable to comment further.”
