NEHAWU, SARS wage dispute – streets affected by the march

The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (NEHAWU) along with the Public Servants Association of South Africa (PSA) will embark on a march to the National Treasury today (Wednesday).

The strike comes as a result of the deadlock in wage negotiations that have been ongoing since January 2022 when tabling workers’ demands to SARS.

NEHAWU READY FOR FULL BLOWN STRIKE TO KICK START

The union declared a dispute after it was clear that the employer was not responding to their wage demands. Instead, was unwavering that the institution does not have money due to National Treasury’s austerity measures.

“The union then declared a dispute in terms of Clause (9.2) of the Constitution of the SARS National Bargaining Forum which directs parties to try and resolve the dispute within 5 days. However, the dispute remains unresolved as the employer continued with non-response to our core demands but only proposed to establish some task team which we rejected,”

    said NEHAWU.

However, the union said it is ready for the full-blown strike to kick start, where members shall demonstrate their power and send a clear message that no employer must take workers for granted hence the fight to defend our hard-won gains.

The union’s substantive demands placed before SARS include amongst others the following:

    • Salaries adjusted using the October 2021 CPI of 5% + 7%, across the board for employees within the Bargaining Unit.
    •  A Single Term implementation on 1st April 2022
    • On Medical Aid and Housing Allowance, full and equal medical aid and housing allowance for all employees. It has been established that not all employees receive the same allowance.
    •  An introduction of Pandemic leave – Demand 10 working days per annum.
    •  A R2000 gift (token of appreciation) to members also to include 60 – 65 years of age.
    •  Pay Progression – An annual adjustment upwards on the applicable pay band of 1.5% where the employee has met the required performance standard.

THE ROUTE OF THE MARCH IS AS FOLLOWS:

The marchers will gather from 09:00 at the open space on Madiba Street and Kgosi Mampuru Streets, said Tshwane metro police spokesperson, Senior Superintendant Isaac Mahamba.

“From the open space, they will join Madiba Street and proceed straight until they reach the National Treasury at the corner of Madiba and Thabo Sehume Streets in Pretoria CBD,”

    said Mahamba.

The following intersections will be affected:

    • Kgosi Mampuru Street
    • Sophie De Bruyn Street
    • Bosman Street
    • Paul Kruger Street
    • Thabo Sehume Street

Mahamba said the marchers are expected to disperse from National Treasury at 13:00.

Tshwane Metro Police officers will be deployed to monitor the march and all affected streets.

Motorists are advised to avoid affected streets and use alternative routes such as:

    • Boom Street
    • Struben Street
    • Francis Baard Street
