The billionaires of South Africa are now featured as holding their financial own among some of the richest in the UK. Nicky Oppenheimer and Douw Steyn have respectively placed 24th and 84th on the billionaires’ board but where are Johann Rupert and his billions?
THE RICH KEEP GETTING RICHER
According to the 2022 Rich List of the UK Sunday Times, the net worth of Oppenheimer and his family is £6.5bn (R129bn). This secured them the 24th spot, a jump up from last year’s 31st palace positioning.
Compared to last year’s listing, the diamond and mining magnate’s fortune ballooned by £659m (R1.3bn).
Douw Steyn and his family’s wealth totalled at £2.1bn (R42bn), a fortune that was made in the insurance sector.
Although Oppenheimer climbed the ladder, Steyn’s family did drop from 79th place to 84th. A strange occurrence considering their fortune grew by £50m (R991m).
The list ranked the top 250 richest and their families in the UK.
Brothers Sri and Gopi Hinduja and their family are listed as the richest people in the UK. They are involved in industry and finance which has secured them a net worth of £28.4bn (R563bn).
NO UK BILLIONAIRES LISTING FOR JOHANN RUPERT
Meanwhile, South Africa’s luxury goods tycoon and billionaire Johann Rupert failed to make an appearance on the UK’s rich list.
According to the real-time rankings of billionaires by Forbes, Rupert sits in 298th with a net worth of $7.4 bn (R117bn).
Although, Douw Steyn and his family make no appearance on the Forbes listing.
Instead, Patrice Motsepe claims the spot as the third richest South African behind Rupert and Oppenheimer with a net worth of $3bn (R47bn). Although Forbes ranks Motsepe as the third richest in the country, the mining magnate sits at 994th place in the overall listing.
Oppenheimer and his family continue to flex their financial muscles as South Africa’s richest, be it on either the UK or Forbes listings.
