One KILLED as truck ploughs through stationed vehicles on N2

One person was killed and several suffered injuries when a truck ploughed through several cars in KwaZulu-Natal. One of the vehicles had broken down in the emergency lane on Friday morning.

Just after 08h30 on Friday morning, Emer-G-Med paramedics together with Netcare 911 and IPSS medical services responded to a horrific collision.

The incident happened on the N2 northbound just after the KwaMashu Highway, said Emer-G-Med.

The collision involved a heavy-duty vehicle, said the paramedic service.

Emergency medical services arrived at the scene to discover that a light delivery vehicle had broken down in the emergency lane.

“Whilst mechanics were working on it, a heavy articulated vehicle ploughed into the scene.”

A man estimated to be 40 years old was found to have suffered fatal injuries. He was declared dead on the arrival of paramedics.

“Four other men were treated for injuries ranging from minor to moderate and taken to nearby hospitals for further medical care.”

The South African Police Service attended the scene and will be investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident, said Emer-G-Med.

Minister of Transport Fikile Mbalula said last month that around R2.5 billion would be used to expand the N2 highway. This will be particularly near Pongola in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

Plans for expanding the highway come after a fatal collision in September involving a scholar transport and a truck.

The truck and the scholar transport collided head-on, killing twenty people, mostly children.

Camera footage showed the truck overtaking another heavy-duty truck on the highway. It then crashed into the scholar transport in the oncoming lane.

The driver had fled the scene shortly after but subsequently handed himself over to the police.

Mbalula said pressure caused by trucks on the highway was linked to several collisions. These issues will be attended to by the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL), he said.

“We also appraised the [Zulu] King about our plans to deal with the carnage on the roads and also our investment of R2.5 billion for the expansion of the N2 near the Pongola side that SANRAL is going to implement,” said Mbalula.
