One suspect was killed while his two accomplices managed to flee the scene following a high-speed chase and shootout with police and security officers in Johannesburg CBD on Monday, 06 June 2022.
The shootout and high-speed chase happened approximately at 14:00.
SUSPECTS START SHOOTING AT THE POLICE
Information was received about suspects who are committing armed robberies and car hijackings in Johannesburg.
The multidisciplinary team, which included members from SAPS Crime Intelligence, the Gauteng Highway Patrol Unit, the Gauteng Traffic Saturation Unit, Tracker Connect, BadBoyz Security and Vision Tactical, followed up.
“The team managed to spot the suspects’ vehicle, an Audi A5, with three occupants, in Mayfair. As the team was stopping the suspects, they sped off and started shooting at members and a shootout ensued,”said Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo.
He said that two suspects jumped out of the moving vehicle and fled on foot.
Police continued to chase the suspects’ vehicle until it crashed into an electric pole in Johannesburg CBD.
“One man, with gunshot wounds, was found inside the vehicle and he was later certified dead by the paramedics.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle was fitted with false registration plates and it was reportedly hijacked in Kempton Park in May this year,”Masondo further added.
LAW ENFORCEMENT APPLAUDED FOR GOOD TEAMWORK
While police were searching the suspects’ vehicle, an unlicensed firearm and ammunition were found.
Moreover, none of the members of law enforcement agencies or the public was injured.
Police are, however, still searching for the two suspects who managed to escape.
Meanwhile, Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, has once more, applauded the multidisciplinary team that has in the past months intercepted numerous suspects that are involved in armed robberies and hijackings in the province.
