The woman who had threatened to take her own life by jumping off the roof of Sandton City is now with her family, the mall has said.
Authorities had to block traffic in Alice Lane, north of Johannesburg, where Sandton City is located, as paramedics and members of the South African Anxiety and Depression Group (SADAG) were at the scene. The woman had one foot over the ledge of the building, where she had been since after 07:00 on Friday, 3 June 2022.
“Following up, the individual who was threatening to jump from Sandton City’s parkade has left the premises & been taken to a place of safety. Sandton City Management, together with the SAPS, facilitated the safe escort of the individual into the care of their family,” the mall said.
SANDTON CITY: THIS ISN’T THE FIRST SUICIDE-RELATED INCIDENT
While the woman was saved from taking her own life, it was just months ago that a similar situation ended tragically. In November 2021, a woman jumped to her death and was declared dead by medics at the scene.
“Sandton City confirms that on 27 November 2021. at approximately 12:04, an individual jumped to their death. Emergency services responded to the scene immediately, but the individual was unfortunately pronounced dead. The SAPS are currently investigating the incident,” it said.
A month before that incident, a teenager had also taken her own life by jumping off the mall’s roof. Unfortunately, the video of the incident has been seen by The South African – and it’s not something you want to watch twice, put it that way. A follow-up clip also shows the young woman lifeless on the ground, after she fell from the very top of the building.
