Security officers injured in Benoni cash-in-transit heist

Three security officers were injured following a cash-in-transit heist on Putfontein Road in Benoni on Friday afternoon.

ER24 paramedics arrived at 14:20 to find several security forces already in attendance.

According to ER24, a light motor vehicle was found well alight in the middle of the road while a wrecked cash-in-transit vehicle was on the side of the road.

“The vehicle had been completely blown open in an explosion; debris spread across the veld.

“Medics assessed three men found walking around the scene and found that they had escaped with minor injuries. Fortunately, no serious injuries or fatalities were found.”

The men were reportedly treated and later transported to nearby hospitals for further care. Local authorities were also on the scene for further investigations.

Eight suspects were shot dead during a shootout with police in an alleged cash-in-transit robbery in Rosettenville, south of Johannesburg.

Five policemen were wounded and two had to be airlifted on Monday, 21 February. The shootout happened near the South Rand Hospital.

Police Minister, Bheki Cele said about 25 suspects of which 8 were certified dead and 8 were arrested.

“Surprisingly without fail, except for one who comes from Botswana, they all come from Zimbabwe and KwaZulu-Natal. They were well armed, they all had mostly AKs about 6 or 7 AK-47s here, with double magazines, which means they are here for business. The surprising one is the one that shot the helicopter and injured the pilot.

“We are working with heartless people that are prepared to kill. I interacted with one of the suspects from KZN and asked him why they are doing this, he said it is because of poverty. I told him there is no such thing if they can afford AKs.”
