Wednesday, 26 October 2022 marks exactly eight years since Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa was shot dead.
Meyiwa was shot at his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s home in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni in Gauteng on 26 October.
8TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF SENZO MEYIWA’S DEATH
When Senzo Meyiwa was shot dead he was at the peak of his career as he was captain for both the national team and Buccaneers. South African football fans were distraught and inarguably nobody ever thought it would take almost a decade to solve his murder case. His father Sam Meyiwa who sought justice passed away without seeing those responsible for the murder of his son behind bars.
One of the people who was suspected to have killed Meyiwa, Zamokuhle Mbatha, was arrested on 31 October 2014 and appeared in court, but he was released on 11 November due to lack of evidence.
There are many theories that have surfaced trying to explain what exactly happened the night Meyiwa was shot. Some have accused music producer Sello “Chicco” Twala’s son Longwe of shooting the late soccer star while others have alleged that Kelly Khumalo shot him by mistake but the State insists Meyiwa was shot by intruders in a botched robbery.

There are two dockets which are investigated by two different teams and also implicate two different groups of people. According to some of the affidavits that have been read at the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria there were never intruders on the day and some neighbours helped clean the house including blood that was on the floor while others packed away bottles and cans of beer before police could arrive to cordon off the scene and take statements.
First State witness and forensic officer, Sergeant Thabo Mosia said it was strange that the murder was only reported four hours later and that during those four hours a lot could have happened and the crime scene may have been tempered with.
Five men are currently on trial for the murder of the late goalkeeper.
Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Bongani Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa and Fisokuhle Ntuli are on trial of the murder of the late soccer star. The five men were arrested in 2020 and they all pleaded not guilty.
Meyiwa’s brother Sifiso has been adamant that the current five men are not responsible for his brother’s death and has repeatedly called for the “correct” people to be arrested which he says are those that were in the house when his brother was shot. It is understood that the people who were present that fateful night will be called to testify when the trial resumes as Meyiwa’s close friend Tumelo Madlala has also testified.
