    SHOOTOUT between police and courier van hijackers and kidnappers

    Police arrested suspects for hijacking a courier vehicle and kidnapping the crew following a shootout.

    The incident happened in Orlando, Soweto on Friday.

    SUSPECTS TARGET COURIER VAN AND ITS GOODS

    According to preliminary reports, a courier van which was transporting goods was hijacked in Orlando.

    The suspects drove off with the driver of the van along with his crew member. The goods were then offloaded in Mofolo, Soweto, said police spokesperson Captain Amanda van Wyk.

    But the driver and his crew member managed to escape the hijacked van and contacted police.

    MULTIDISCIPLINARY POLICE TEAM NABS THE SUSPECTS

    The police in Soweto together with the Johannesburg metro police department followed up on the tip-off.

    “A shootout ensued upon arrival by the police, which resulted in one suspect being injured. The stolen property was recovered at the scene,” she said.

    The two suspects are to appear before a Magistrate’s Court soon. They face several charges including hijacking, possession of presumed stolen property, kidnapping and attempted murder, said van Wyk.

    BUSINESS ROBBERS NABBED IN GQEBERHA

    The following day, police in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, nabbed five suspects for stealing property during a business robbery.

    The business robbery had taken place on Friday in Seaview, police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said.

    It is alleged that at approximately 09h30, a spaza shop in New Rest in the Seaview vicinity was robbed.

    “Shortly after the robbery was reported, information relating to the suspects was immediately circulated via all SAPS channels.”

    The alleged five suspects apparently fled the scene in a blue Mazda Midge.

    “The area was flooded with vehicles on the lookout for suspects. All exit routes were blocked off,” said van Rensburg.

    Just under three hours later, police spotted the Mazda at another business and they tactically approached it.

    “Five suspects were arrested and all stolen property which included cigarettes, cash and two cellphones, were recovered. A toy firearm was also confiscated.”

    The five face charges of business robbery and will appear before the Gqeberha Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
