We’ve got the latest news stories and headlines in South Africa on Friday, 18 November.

Get this man in a jail cell and out of functioning society: The SPCA has confirmed that a 23-year-old Cape Town man was arrested just hours after ‘sickening selfie-style video footage emerged’ on social media, showing him raping a dog.

What Charlize Theron said in jest about Afrikaans has still generated a furious response from critics – so we did a bit of fact-checking.

The family of the missing young man is offering a reward of R200 000 for any information that could assist in finding him. The young man, Willem Kruger, was STILL missing on Thursday after he left Morgenzon in Mpumalanga early on Sunday morning.

Only in South Africa, man. Cops in Joburg were left stunned when they came across someone cutting down a traffic light this week.

And lastly, this is shocking to watch. In a viral video on social media on Thursday, a man is seen disarming a female police officer.

Is Afrikaans ‘dying out’? We put Charlize Theron’s claims to the test

She may have just been joking around with her podcast host friends, but given Charlize Theron’s status, her words carry weight. This week, she branded Afrikaans as an ‘unhelpful language’ that is ‘dying out’. She also scoffed that ‘about 44 people’ still bother speaking the dialect.

But is there any truth to her statements? We’ve had a little look at the data…

According to an update published by Ethnologue in 2021 – one of the leading academic resources for world languages – there are some mixed results to digest. Indeed, the data on Afrikaans certainly makes for a fascinating read.

LOOK: Joburg crook caught trying to steal a TRAFFIC LIGHT…

Why would you steal a traffic light? A man in Joburg has been swiftly arrested by local authorities, after he was – quite literally – caught red-handed. When Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers arrived at the scene, they were left baffled.

After finally making sense of the situation, law enforcement officials detained the suspect. He was caught in possession of cutting tools, and had already chopped the traffic light down. The incident took place on the corner of Harrison and Main Street, in the city’s CBD.

A statement has been issued by the JMPD, alongside a post on social media. They confirmed that the male suspect was arrested for ‘tampering with municipal infrastructure’. The Department was also keen to stress that they would not tolerate such ‘lawlessness’ in their metro.
