    Play stupid games, win stupid prizes: That’s what happened to this would-be hijacker in the Cape Town suburb of Phillipi, when he targeted the wrong vehicle earlier this week and ended up getting dragged down a busy street.

    A shark alert has been issued for the Plettenberg Bay coastline due to increased shark activity.

    Stellenbosch student was arrested in connection with an alleged rape that took place on campus on Tuesday night, 17 May, at a residence in Victoria Street.

    The South African Reserve Bank’s (SARB) Monetary Policy Committee announced that the repurchase rate would be increased by 50 basis points (bps) with effect from Friday, 20 May.

    The ANC has encountered another stinging rebuke on Thursday, after they were accused of trying to target the Afrikaans language once more. Fresh from conceding defeat about the native tongue’s indigenous status this week, it seems we’ve got round two on the way.

    WARNING: Shark alert issued for Plettenberg Bay coastline

    A shark alert has been issued for the Plettenberg Bay coastline due to increased shark activity.

     The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) spokesperson, Craig Lambinon said increased shark activity has been noticed along the Plettenberg Bay coastline, and caution is advised.

    “This is a reminder that sharks are known to feed inshore along the coastline at this time of year,” he said.

    INFLATION: Reserve Bank hikes repo rate to 4,75% – steepest increase in six years

    The South African Reserve Bank’s (SARB) Monetary Policy Committee announced that the repurchase rate would be increased by 50 basis points (bps) with effect from Friday, 20 May.

    The increase is the steepest since 2016 and takes the repo rate to 4,75% and the prime lending rate for banks to 8,25%.

    Sixteen out of 24 economists predicted the outcome in a recent Reuters survey, while the remaining eight believed it would be a 25 bps increase.

    ANC ‘want to REMOVE the Afrikaans’ from an Afrikaans-language moment

    The ANC has encountered another stinging rebuke on Thursday, after they were accused of trying to target the Afrikaans language once more. Fresh from conceding defeat about the native tongue’s indigenous status this week, it seems we’ve got round two on the way.

    The Afrikaans Language Monument (or Afrikaans Taalmonument) in Paarl is, according to several sources, set to undergo a name-change. Proposals from the department of Sports, Art and Culture allegedly want to ‘remove the Afrikaans language’ from the structure.

    Stellenbosch student arrested for alleged rape on campus

    A Stellenbosch student was arrested in connection with an alleged rape that took place on campus on Tuesday night, 17 May, at a residence in Victoria Street.

    South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk told The South African that a 19-year-old woman victim reported the alleged rape on Wednesday.

    The suspect was arrested on the same day and he is expected to appear before the Stellenbosch Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
