    South Africa: Today’s latest news and headlines, Monday 6 June 2022

    A lot can change overnight, but we’ll keep you in the know with the latest news stories and headlines in South Africa on Monday 6 June.

    Provincial Social Development MEC in KZN Nonhlanhla Khoza shared the horrific details of the death of a 13-year-old girl. The teenager, from KwaNzimakwe, was beaten to death. It has been alleged that church members were trying to ‘rid her of demons’.

    Five-year-old Marno Muller is fighting for his life ICE is on full life support after he was found hanging from a slide at a school in Springs.

    According to his aunt, Nadia Minnie, Marno suffered a setback and was placed on full life support. 

    Life Chatsmed Gardens Hospital had to be evacuated after wards were gutted by fire in the early hours of Sunday, 5 June 2022.  

    Theuns du Toit, the Stellenbosch University student who urinated on another student’s belongings, is back in the spotlight. An image of Du Toit’s brother Pierre brandishing the Apartheid flag has emerged and caused concern.

    The fallout from Irish airline Ryanair’s decision to test South African passport holders’ general knowledge in Afrikaans continued over the weekend.

    There was widespread confusion and anger last week after the low-cost airline introduced a 15-question quiz in Afrikaans before travellers were allowed on flights both to and from the United Kingdom.

    Girl, 13, beaten to death allegedly by pastor during ‘exorcism’

     The teenager, from KwaNzimakwe, was beaten to death. It has been alleged that church members were trying to ‘rid her of demons’.

    Khoza is expected to visit the family of the girl on Monday, 6 June. Her office explained that five children were held hostage for four days and were allegedly beaten by a local pastor with the reasoning being an ‘exorcism’.

    “Five children were held hostage from the 25th until May 29th 2022 and allegedly beaten up by a local pastor, saying to exorcise them of demons.”

    Five-year-old Marno suffers a setback, now on life support [Update]

    Five-year-old Marno Muller is fighting for his life ICE is on full life support after he was found hanging from a slide at a school in Springs.

    According to his aunt, Nadia Minnie, Marno suffered a setback and was placed on full life support.  Little Marno’s right lung collapsed. He is in a critical condition and his family has asked for prayers during this difficult time.

    “Marno is on strong sedation and full life support. He has also already started getting blood transfusions. The doctor explained that this would continue for the next three days to help his little lung recover.”

    The 15 Afrikaans questions Ryanair asked SA passengers: How many answers do YOU know?

    The fallout from Irish airline Ryanair’s decision to test South African passport holders’ general knowledge in Afrikaans continued over the weekend.

    There was widespread confusion and anger last week after the low-cost airline introduced a 15-question quiz in Afrikaans before travellers were allowed on flights both to and from the United Kingdom.

    The South African website reported on Friday that Ryanair confirmed that it asked South African passport holders to complete the quiz before being allowed to board their planes.

    Stellenbosch urination: Brother of accused GRINS holding apartheid flag

    Theuns du Toit, the Stellenbosch University student who urinated on another student’s belongings, is back in the spotlight. An image of Du Toit’s brother Pierre brandishing the Apartheid flag has emerged and caused concern.

    Pierre, along with three others, can be seen smiling as they hold the banned old SA flag. IOL reported that the picture was taken in December 2021. The publication stated that the image has been a cause of concern for many.

    Especially after Rudi du Toit, their father, called for a meeting with Babalo Ndwayana’s family following the urination incident. Theuns was caught on camera urinating on Ndwayana’s belongings in the Huis Marais residence in May.

    Chatsworth’s Life Chatsmed Gardens Hospital gutted by fire

    Life Chatsmed Gardens Hospital had to be evacuated after wards were gutted by fire in the early hours of Sunday, 5 June 2022.  

    A number of emergency personnel as well as the eThekwini Fire and Rescue Services were at the hospital in Chatsworth, South of Durban. According to Emer-G-Med, reports from the scene were that a fire broke out in one of the wards at Life Chatsmed Gardens leading to an evacuation.

    “No injuries were sustained, however considerable damage was caused by the fire. An official statement will be issued by the hospital in due course.”
