South Africa: Today’s latest news and headlines, Monday 8 August 2022

A lot can change overnight, but we’ll keep you in the know with the latest news stories and headlines in South Africa on Monday, 8 August 2022.

Snowfall of between 5- 20cm was expected on Sunday overnight and into Monday in parts of South Africa.

This isn’t a pretty sight. Hartbeespoort Dam – one of the largest in South Africa – has seen its water turn green in some parts. This has made the facility look rather unpalatable to observers. However, those keen to blame the government for this fiasco may be firing wide of the mark.

The City of Cape Town has lifted the precautionary boiling notice for parts of the city as their water is now safe to drink.

There is a sad story behind the woman growing her nails for over 25 years. Diana Armstrong was recently awarded a Guinness World Record for her 1.3m long nails.

The DA are claiming a policy victory this weekend, after Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi confirmed that a host of new jobs in the medical sector would now be added to South Africa’s Critical Skills List.

UPDATE: Cape Town water FINALLY safe to drink

The City of Cape Town has lifted the precautionary boiling notice for parts of the city as their water is now safe to drink.

The City of Cape Town had cautioned residents in part of the city on Friday to boil their tap water before use.

This was due to the Faure Water Treatment Plant system distributing discoloured water.

But the latest sampling results show that it is now safe to drink. The discolouration experienced in parts of the eastern, central and southern suburbs has been resolved, said MMC for Water and Sanitation Zahid Badroodien.

‘We need doctors’: Eight NEW jobs added to SA’s Critical Skills List

The DA are claiming a policy victory this weekend, after Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi confirmed that a host of new jobs in the medical sector would now be added to South Africa’s Critical Skills List.

The exclusive list identifies the industries and professions which are suffering from glaring shortages in Mzansi. Right now, healthcare finds itself light by TENS OF THOUSANDS of jobs. That’s why the government is ready to open up its borders to those who can help.

As well as wanting senior and experienced clinical doctors, South Africa also requires more professionals to work in child care. Furthermore, our hospital wards are in dire need of staffing. The following EIGHT jobs have now been added to the Critical Skills List.

Eww! Why are parts of Hartbeespoort Dam now turning GREEN?

This isn’t a pretty sight. Hartbeespoort Dam – one of the largest in South Africa – has seen its water turn green in some parts. This has made the facility look rather unpalatable to observers. However, those keen to blame the government for this fiasco may be firing wide of the mark.

Videos have been shared online over the weekend, showing how the green, algae-like covering has hidden the water almost completely in selected areas of Harties. Boats are left to float on top of the questionable substance, with debris sticking to the surface good measure.
