    South Africa: Today’s latest news and headlines, Sunday 5 June 2022

    The Presidency announced that its Director-General, Phindile Baleni, received a death threat from unknown persons this week. The threat was made via a letter in Baleni’s letterbox. It was accompanied by a bullet.

    The Presidency said State Security Agencies had been notified and the matter is under investigation, in a statement on Saturday, 4 June.

    An early morning fire tore through an informal settlement in Diep River, Cape Town on Saturday. Approximately 40 firefighters from stations across the metro were sent to the scene.

    City of Cape Town MayCo Member for Safety and Security Alderman JP Smith said the City’s Fire and Rescue Service received a call about a fire at The Gatjie informal settlement at approximately 7:26 on Saturday.

    The three siblings who died after eating meat with rat poisoning would be laid to rest on Saturday.

    The two learners from Kaalfontein Primary School and their one-year-old sister sadly died after consuming poisoned meat that was meant for rats.

    The Cape Town police have arrested more suspects in connection with the brutal murder of Abongile Mafalala, 31, who was stoned, assaulted, and set alight in Parkwood, Cape Town, on Tuesday in a mob attack the authorities say was sparked by fake news on social media.

    Bullet in letterbox: Death threats made against Presidency Director-General

    The Presidency announced that its Director-General, Phindile Baleni, received a death threat from unknown persons this week. The threat was made via a letter in Baleni’s letterbox. It was accompanied by a bullet.

    The Presidency said State Security Agencies have been notified and the matter is under investigation, in a statement on Saturday, 4 June.

    “Several days ago Ms Baleni received a threat by an unknown person or persons who seemingly want to affect Presidency’s processing of the findings of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of State Capture, Corruption & Fraud in the Public Sector including Organs of State.”

    Three siblings who died of rat poisoning to be laid to rest

    The three siblings who died after eating meat with rat poisoning would be laid to rest on Saturday.

    The two learners from Kaalfontein Primary School and their one-year-old sister sadly died after consuming poisoned meat that was meant for rats.

    While the two children were at school, their grandmother sprinkled poison on meat and placed it inside a container on top of the fridge. The intention was to use the poisoned meat later to trap rats. The grandmother then left for church.

    Two dead, 64 displaced after fire rips through ‘The Gatjie’ in Cape Town

    An early morning fire tore through an informal settlement in Diep River, Cape Town on Saturday. Approximately 40 firefighters from stations across the metro were sent to the scene.

    City of Cape Town MayCo Member for Safety and Security Alderman JP Smith said the City’s Fire and Rescue Service received a call about a fire at The Gatjie informal settlement at approximately 7:26 on Saturday.

    Around 40 firefighters from Constantia, Wynberg, Lakeside, Ottery, Mitchells Plain and Roeland Street were dispatched to the scene to tackle the blaze with three water jets and one fog jet.

    Security officers injured in Benoni cash-in-transit heist

    Three security officers were injured following a cash-in-transit heist on Putfontein Road in Benoni on Friday afternoon. 

    ER24 paramedics arrived at 14:20 to find several security forces already in attendance.

    According to ER24, a light motor vehicle was found well alight in the middle of the road while a wrecked cash-in-transit vehicle was on the side of the road.

    Parkwood mob attack: Nine suspects arrested for killing e-hailing driver

    The Cape Town police have arrested more suspects in connection with the brutal murder of Abongile Mafalala, 31, who was stoned, assaulted and set alight in Parkwood, Cape Town on Tuesday in a mob attack the authorities say was sparked by fake news on social media.

    South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi told The South African that nine suspects have been arrested, on Friday night, 3 June.

    The suspects face charges of murder and robbery with a weapon other than a firearm. The nine are expected to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 6 June.
