South Africa: Today’s latest news and headlines, Thursday 2 June 2022

We’ve got all the latest news stories and headlines in South Africa you really need to know on Thursday 2 June.

What unbelievable scenes we’ve just witnessed, here. A small plane has performed a crash landing on the R44 in Stellenbosch, forcing motorists to weave out of its way in the process.

The light aircraft had to bring itself down on the R44 near Winery Road. Locals have been asked to avoid the area, and traffic has been diverted at the intersection. Miraculously, no-one was killed as a result of this emergency manoeuvre.

Social media users were not impressed with the driver who decided to take a shortcut and drove on the railway, just to have his car get stuck there and struck by a train on Sunday.

Former spy boss Arthur Fraser has filed criminal charges against President Cyril Ramaphosa over the alleged theft of roughly $4 million dollars (that is more than R62 million) in cash that was apparently kept on one of his properties. The big shocker here is that Fraser claims not only was the money stolen, but that Ramaphosa knew all about it and hid it from the relevant authorities.

The High Court in Pretoria has found Moses Makoso, a 31-year-old man from De Deur in Johannesburg, guilty of premeditated murder, rape and kidnapping a six-year-old girl, as well as obstruction of justice.

Fraser says he laid the charges against Ramaphosa at the Rosebank Police Station in Johannesburg.

“The details of the charges and the supporting evidence, including photographs, bank accounts, video footage and names are contained in my statement filed with the Rosebank Police Station,” he said in a statement on Wednesday, 1 June 2022.

Pretoria: Man guilty of rape, murder of six-year-old girl

The High Court in Pretoria has found Moses Makoso, a 31-year-old man from De Deur in Johannesburg, guilty of premeditated murder, rape and kidnapping a six-year-old girl, as well as obstruction of justice.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) Regional Spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana, the shocking crime occurred on 29 April 2021. The girl and two boys had gone to the bush in Maboloka, Brits, which was near Makoso’s home, to get cucumbers.

“Makoso called the three children to his house. He then instructed the brother and the friend to go back home to wear shoes. He promised to give them fish on their return. The two boys left and he then led the little girl back to the bushes where he raped, strangled her to death and set her body alight”

‘As low as MINUS 9°C!’ – SA facing big freeze on Wednesday night

Eish! There’s cold, and there’s whatever frozen-over hell this is. The latest weather forecast for South Africa indicate that a ‘big freeze’ is on its way to the rest of Mzansi, after Gauteng was chilled to the core last night.

The mercury plunged to MINUS 5°C in some parts of the province, with widespread frost and sub-zero temperatures reaching the suburbs of Pretoria and Johannesburg respectively. Although Gauteng is now on course for a slightly milder night, the same can’t be said for the rest of us.

That’s because the biting cold is setting itself down in EVERY province this evening. Even Limpopo and Mpumalanga will be exposed to the elements, with freezing patches likely to hit Polokwane, Mokopane, Middelburg, and Embalenhle.
