    South Africa: Today’s latest news and headlines, Tuesday, 7 June 2022

    We’ve got all the latest news stories and headlines in South Africa you really need to know on Tuesday 7 June 2022.

    The Ministry of Justice confirmed the arrest of notorious Gupta brothers – Rajesh and Atul – in a statement on Monday night, 6 June.

    Department spokesperson Chrispin Phiri said the South African government received information from law enforcement authorities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) that the Gupta brothers had been arrested.

    A measle outbreak has been confirmed in Gauteng, but the Minister of Health has called for calm amid the four confirmed cases. 

    According to the National Health Department spokesperson Foster Mohale, the four cases were detected over the last two weeks of May 2022.

    AfriForum leader, Ernst Roets and his family were caught up in an armed robbery at Spur at the Centurion Lifestyle Centre on Sunday night. 

    Roets and his family were there to celebrate his son’s birthday when the incident happened.

    An elderly woman was BRUTALLY attacked and murdered in a luxury golf estate in Mosselbay.

     A video of an angry mother in a nightgown drags daughter out of a groove has gone viral.

    The girl clearly did not have permission to attend the groove.

    BREAKING: State Capture fugitives Rajesh and Atul Gupta arrested

    The Ministry of Justice confirmed the arrest of notorious Gupta brothers – Rajesh and Atul – in a statement on Monday night, 6 June.

    Department spokesperson Chrispin Phiri said the South African government received information from law enforcement authorities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) that the Gupta brothers had been arrested.

    “Discussions between various law enforcement agencies in the UAE and South Africa on the way forward are ongoing. The South African government will continue to cooperate with the UAE.”

    The International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol) issued a red notice for Rajesh and Atul who are believed to be the masterminds behind the alleged State Capture project in South Africa earlier this year. Their wives, Arthi and Chetali, have no such notice against them.

    Measle outbreak CONFIRMED in Gauteng – but remain calm

    A measle outbreak has been confirmed in Gauteng, but the Minister of Health has called for calm amid the four confirmed cases. 

    According to the National Health Department spokesperson Foster Mohale, the four cases were detected over the last two weeks of May 2022. 

    “Over the last two weeks of May 2022, four suspected cases of measles from persons residing in Gauteng have been notified and ultimately confirmed through laboratory testing conducted by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD).”

    Elderly woman BRUTALLY murdered in Mosselbay luxury golf estate

    An elderly woman was BRUTALLY attacked and murdered in a luxury golf estate in Mosselbay.

    The 79-year-old Margaretha Willemse was found seated on a chair in her bedroom with a wound to the neck, while her 87-year-old husband Johannes survived after sustaining multiple stab wounds.

    Police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie said the Garden Route Police had activated the 72-Hour plan through the mobilisation of specialised units and forensic experts who had been on the scene of a murder.

    AfriForum leader caught up in armed robbery at Centurion Spur

    AfriForum leader, Ernst Roets and his family were caught up in an armed robbery at Spur at the Centurion Lifestyle Centre on Sunday night. 

    Roets and his family were there to celebrate his son’s birthday when the incident happened.

    AfriForum Head of Policy and Action, Ernst Roets said an armed gang stormed the place just when he and his family had finished paying and were stepping out. 

    Zandile Mafe’s bail appeal re-application was heard by a full bench of judges in the Cape Town High Court on Monday, 30 May.

    A video of an angry mother in a nightgown drags daughter out of a groove has gone viral.

    The girl clearly did not have permission to attend the groove.

    Twitter user @Collen_KM shared the clip in total horror. Thinking about what they would have done if their mother showed up at the groove left them horrified.
