    South Africa: Today’s latest news and headlines, Wednesday 1 June 2022

    We’ve got all the latest news stories and headlines in South Africa you really need to know on Wednesday 1 June.

    Fuel prices are on the rise in June – but they didn’t reach their horrifying potential after the government made a last-minute decision to extend a reduction in certain taxes for the next two months.

    In other news, two officers who were caught on camera DRUNK, in uniform, and behind the wheel, with a beer bottle in hand, have been arrested. 

    Mondli Khumalo remains in an ICU unit on Tuesday after he endured a horrific attack during a night out in the UK. The rising star has been capped at the Under-19 level for South Africa, and he’s been plying his trade as a club cricketer for a Somerset-based team.

    Meanwhile, five-year-old Marno Muller is fighting for his life after he was found hanging from a slide at a school in Springs on Thursday morning.

    A Gauteng granny is trending for the very worst reasons on Tuesday after she launched into a racist tirade about black people while dealing with the police. The pensioner was filmed branding black South Africans as ‘barbaric’, and also claimed ‘you cannot see them in the dark.

    OFFICIAL fuel prices for June: Here’s what you’ll be paying at the pumps

    Fuel prices are on the rise in June – but they didn’t reach their horrifying potential, after the government made a last-minute decision to extend a reduction in certain taxes for the next two months.

    Ministers Gwede Mantashe and Enoch Godongwana have both agreed to slash the General Fuel Levy for an extra two months. Had it been allowed to expire as planned this evening, South Africans would likely have paid about R4-per-litre MORE on their fuel in June.

    WATCH: DRUNK police officers cause an accident and try to flee scene

    Police said the two officers who were caught on camera DRUNK, in uniform, and behind the wheel, with a beer bottle in hand, have been arrested. 

    They reportedly caused an accident on the R58 outside Lady Grey in the Eastern Cape on 26 May 2022. 

    The video of the two officers has since gone viral on social media.

    Crowdfunder launched after young SA cricketer ‘savagely attacked’ in UK

    Mondli Khumalo remains in an ICU unit on Tuesday, after he endured a horrific attack during a night out in the UK. The rising star has been capped at Under-19 level for South Africa, and he’s been plying his trade as a club cricketer for a Somerset-based team.

    Police confirmed that they have interviewed a suspect, and more lines of inquiry have already been launched.

    WATCH: Five-year-old boy STILL fighting for his life after a slide accident

    Five-year-old Marno Muller is fighting for his life after he was found hanging from a slide at a school in Springs on Thursday morning.

    According to his family, the school said Marno was playing like normal on the slide on Thursday morning when the strings of his jacket hoodie got stuck at the top of the slide. And as Marno was sliding down, the strings got tighter, and he began suffocating halfway down the slide.

    Watch: Proudly racist Gauteng granny tells cops ‘black people are barbaric’

    A Gauteng granny is trending for the very worst reasons on Tuesday, after she launched into a racist tirade about black people while dealing with the police. The pensioner was filmed branding black South Africans as ‘barbaric’, and also claimed ‘you cannot see them in the dark’.

    The incident took place after the woman phoned the police, in relation to the theft of one of her dogs. When officers arrived at the scene, she was visibly irate – and genuinely did not seem to care that the cop himself was black.
