    South Africa: Today’s latest news and headlines, Wednesday 22 June 2022

    We’ve got all the latest news stories and headlines in South Africa you really need to know on Wednesday 22 June.

    Crikey, things are moving fast in the Farmgate saga. With Hawks already conducting research into Cyril Ramaphosa’s mysterious cash stash, it seems that there will now be a more international flavour to this probe – after the FBI was approached to investigate the matter.

    It’s been a wild, wild ride. But, two years and three months after South Africa entered its first COVID lockdown, it now seems that the last remaining restrictions will be SCRAPPED by the government – and mask-wearing laws could be banished by Wednesday.

    A school named after Jacob Zuma in Durban is catching heat on Tuesday – after parents lashed out at ‘drunk teachers’ leading classes.

    Thirty-five farm workers sustained injuries when a truck overturned on the R45 Klapmuts in the Cape Winelands on Monday.

    Just in: FBI contacted to investigate Ramaphosa farm robbery

    Crikey, things are moving fast in the Farmgate saga. With Hawks already conducting research into Cyril Ramaphosa’s mysterious cash stash, it seems that there will now be a more international flavour to this probe – after the FBI was approached to investigate the matter.

    It’s all down to the work of DA leader John Steenhuisen. The veteran politician confirmed on Tuesday that the top US crime agency had been contacted by his office, with a request to investigate the alleged criminal activity that took place on Phala Phala farm.

    Update: South Africa’s mask-wearing laws could be gone by TOMORROW

    It’s been a wild, wild ride. But, two years and three months after South Africa entered its first COVID lockdown, it now seems that the last remaining restrictions will be SCRAPPED by the government – and mask-wearing laws could be banished by tomorrow.

    That’s because Cyril Ramaphosa will meet with all nine provincial premiers on Wednesday 22 June, at the President’s Coordinating Council. The PCC is used for the ANC leader to discuss major changes to COVID-19 laws, amongst other things.

    Jacob Zuma High School scandal: Parents want ‘drunk teachers’ FIRED

    Parents with children attending the JG Zuma High School (or Jacob Zuma High School) have expressed their outrage this week, after two educators were accused of taking classes while they were bladdered. The pair of ‘drunk teachers’ became the subject of protest action on Tuesday.

    It was announced on Monday that there’d be a picket at the Durban-based school, demanding the immediate removal of the allegedly drunk teachers. The accused have been reported for ‘drinking excessively’, ‘working while intoxicated’, and subsequent ‘absenteeism’…

    Farm workers: 35 Injured after truck tips over in the Western Cape

    Thirty-five farm workers sustained injuries when a truck overturned on the R45 Klapmuts in the Cape Winelands on Monday.

    The farm workers were reportedly travelling to work when the truck tipped on its side. Attending emergency responders from ER24 and the Western Cape Metro Emergency Medical Services (EMS) found numerous occupants on the side of the road.

    Two ER24 paramedics killed in truck accident on the N1

    Two ER24 paramedics were killed in a truck accident on the N1 during the early hours of Tuesday morning.

    According to ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring, the accident happened at approximately 00:07 on Tuesday.

    “On the 21st of June, at approximately 00h07, two ER24 paramedics from the Polokwane branch were tragically killed when their ambulance rear-ended a stationary truck on the N1 highway near the Codrington offramp, Limpopo.”

    He furthermore said the paramedics were returning to their branch after they had completed transporting a patient to a hospital for further treatment.
