Suspected robber shot, accomplice arrested in high-speed chase in Joburg

A suspected robber is in hospital after he was shot and his accomplice arrested following a high-speed chase and shootout with police.

The incident happened on Monday morning.

While police were patrolling in the Germiston area they received the information about a courier vehicle being robbed. Police were told four suspects driving a white Audi were involved.

Further information indicated that the vehicle was travelling towards Pretoria along the N3.

“The police followed the vehicle until the suspects took the Marlboro off-ramp.  As the police were approaching, the suspects stopped the Audi and jumped out, running in different directions,”

said Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo.

It is then that the suspects started shooting at the police who returned fire.

One suspect sustained a gunshot wound and was taken to the hospital under police guard. The second suspect was detained.

The other two suspects managed to flee the scene.

Masondo further said, three unlicensed firearms and cellphones to the estimated value of R200 000 were recovered.

“The vehicle driven by the suspects was reportedly hijacked in Yeoville, Johannesburg,”

    said Lieutenant Colonel Masondo.

Police are still searching for the other two suspects who have managed to evade arrest.

The arrested suspects were charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, possession of a reportedly hijacked vehicle, attempted murder, and possession of suspected stolen property.

Meanwhile, in KwaZulu-Natal, officers of the Pietermaritzburg K9 Unit arrested two suspects who hijacked a taxi.

Police received information about a taxi that was hijacked at the Meyi location in Ibisi, heading towards Mooi River on the N3 freeway.

“Police officers attempted to intercept the taxi but the suspects sped off whilst shooting at police officers.

“The suspects drove through the boom gate at the Mooi Toll Plaza and sped off. At Riversdale in Mooi River, three men alighted from their vehicle whilst shooting at police officers,”

said police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala.

The suspects’ vehicle crashed into a wall of a home.

Police arrested two suspects aged 22 and 23. One of the suspects sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh.

Inside the taxi, police found a pistol with two rounds of ammunition and a gas gun.

It has been confirmed that the taxi was hijacked in the Ibisi police area.

The suspects were charged with attempted murder, possession of a stolen vehicle and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
