Toddlers injured as high-speed chase suspect crashes through the wall

A border wall collapsed, injuring two children in Nellmapius in Pretoria on Tuesday after a high-speed chase suspect drove into a residential wall.

This happened after a suspect who was being chased by police and a security company in the area was involved in an accident, driving through the wall.

According to Volunteer Emergency Medical Response Unit (VEMRU) spokesperson Cassper Visser, they responded to a call of a motor vehicle accident with children injured around 12:00.

“On arrival, we found that one suspect vehicle lost control and crashed through a residential wall in a high-speed chase with SAPS and Private security.

“The border wall collapsed on two children under the age of two, who were playing outside in their yard with their caretaker,”

    said Visser.

One child sustained serious injuries to the head while the youngest luckily escaped with minor injuries.

Furthermore, Visser said both children, a 19-months-old and a nine-month-old were stabilized on the scene before being rushed to a nearby hospital for further care.

“Both children are in stable condition. Silverton police were on the scene and the suspects escaped over the back wall of the property. This was while security stopped to assist get the children out of the rubble,”

    explained Visser.

Police are yet to respond to an enquiry sent to them regarding the incident.

Meanwhile, in another accident, in Pretoria, two people were left seriously injured and another two with moderate injuries.

According to Visser, VEMRU was called to a serious motor vehicle accident on Greham road in Pretoria east.

“On arrival, we found that two vehicles collided head-on. Two people were found with serious injuries while another two with minor injuries.

“One person was still found trapped in the vehicle. Specialized hydraulic equipment had to be used by Gauteng EMS rescue technicians to remove the patient from the vehicle,”

    said Visser.

He said all patients were stabilized on scene before being transported to nearby hospitals for further treatment.
