    Two Metro EMS ambulance members killed in head-on collision

    A head-on collision in Worcester on the morning of Sunday, 18 September, resulted in the deaths of two Metro EMS ambulance crew members.

    A truck and an ambulance collided head-on

    Reports revealed that the ambulance collided head-on with a tanker truck. No patient was in the ambulance at the time of the accident, confirmed the Western Cape Department of Health.

    The accident occurred on the R43 Wolseley Ceres Road.

    Health MEC in WC and Premier will soon be visiting the EMS office

    Provincial Health MEC Dr Nomafrench Mbombo passed her condolences adding that it was an immense loss to the department. EWN reports that Mbombo and Premier Alan Winde will, on Monday, visit the EMS office in Witzenberg.

    Western Cape government health is deeply saddened by the tragic deaths of two EMS officers early this morning in a collision on the Wolseley Ceres Road. We extend our deepest sympathies to the loved ones families, friends and colleagues,” said spokesperson Sandra Maritz.

    Driver in Pongola accident that killed 21 people hands himself over

    Meanwhile, it was reported that the truck driver in the N2 Pongola accident on Friday, 16 September, handed himself over to the authorities after initially fleeing the scene. As previously reported, 21 people, including 19 school children, died in the crash between the truck and a bakkie on Friday.

    “The driver handed himself over to the police today after a call by the MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Sipho Hlomuka,” said the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport on Saturday.

    Before he surrendered himself, the provincial police launched a manhunt after he fled the scene. The driver is expected to appear before the Pongola Magistrate’s Court on Monday and MEC Hlomuka will be in attendance. Dashboard camera footage of the tragic accident emerged and allegedly showed the truck driver attempting to overtake another truck before crashing into the bakkie.
