UPDATE: Mutilated body of Mpumalanga girl (6) found in shallow grave

Three neighbours of the six-year-old Mpumalanga girl who went missing last month have been arrested for her murder, rape, and kidnapping after her mutilated body was found in a shallow grave.

Bontle Mashiyane from Mganduzweni near Whiteriver in Mpumalanga went missing on 30 April and her body was found a few metres from her home over the weekend.

    NEIGHBOURS INVOLVED IN GIRL’S MURDER

The six-year-old girl was playing with her friends on the day of her disappearance.

Mpumalanga Premier Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane said Mashiyane’s mutilated body was pointed out by a suspect who was released on parole in December 2021.

The suspects are Mashiyane’s neighbours, a woman and her boyfriend, and the parolee, who all confessed to the gruesome killing.

Mtsweni-Tsipane said the woman was part and parcel of the search, and it was not the first murder she and her accomplices have committed.

“They have confessed to having murdered four children in the same street, and this one is the fifth child. Importantly, two of the children they have killed are her sisters’ kids. What kind of a woman is this?”

    said Mtsweni-Tsipane.

She further said, Mashiyane’s body parts were cut, and her head was left with an empty skull.

“The child was raped before she was murdered.

A six-year-old child was raped by a 40-year-old man who was instructed by the woman, who is her neighbour,”

    said Mtsweni-Tsipane.

Furthermore, another two suspects are being questioned by police in connection with the gruesome killing, including a traditional healer.

The suspects are expected to appear in court on Monday.

HEINOUS AND GRUESOME KILLING OF BONTLE MASHIYANE CONDEMNED

Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Nonhlanhla Ncube-Ndaba, has condemned in the strongest terms the gender-based-violence (GBV) gruesome killing of Mashiyane.

“The committee condemns this heinous and gruesome killing of this little girl. The GBV-related killing of women and children has reached unprecedented and shocking proportions. It characterises South Africa as an unsafe and death-trap place for women and children,”

    said Ncube-Ndaba.

In addition to this, she has called on the people of White River and surrounding communities to also assist the police in uncovering the perpetrators of Bontle’s murder.

She also appealed to the SAPS and other law enforcement agencies to use the available evidence well to arrest and successfully prosecute the killers.

    “They should rot in jail.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to Bontle’s family. May her soul rest in eternal peace,”

    said Ncube-Ndaba.
