WARNING: “Beware of fake metro police job ads” – JMPD

A warning has been issued by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) to job seekers to be wary of fake metro police job ads.

BEWARE OF FAKE METRO POLICE ADVERTISEMENTS AND JOB OFFERS

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla says JMPD distances itself from fake advertisements that are currently circulating on social media and internet sites.

“There are currently no vacancies for Metro Police Officers in the City of Johannesburg. Genuine adverts will be placed on daily newspapers and the City of Johannesburg’s website only, not on social media platforms and dubious internet sites,” Fihla warned.

THIS IS NOT A NEW PHENOMENON IN THE CITY

He said criminals have in the past taken advantage of and robbed young people of money for fake JMPD jobs.

“Some of the scammers were arrested for selling these fake jobs.”

He also reminded job seekers that JMPD jobs are not for sale, “and we want to emphasize that no one is required to pay any sum of money for JMPD vacancies”.

He went on, “Once a successful candidate has met all the requirements and is accepted for training at the JMPD Academy, they will receive a monthly stipend”.

“Selling fake jobs is illegal and anyone who is caught selling jobs will face the full might of the law and will be criminally charged,” he warned.

“We encourage members of the public to report scammers to the police and any other law enforcement agency,” Fihla urged the public.

FAKE METRO POLICE JOB ADS A CONCERN IN WESTERN CAPE

Meanwhile, in July the City of Cape Town also warned job seekers about a fake ‘Trainee Traffic Officer’ advertisement that had been circulating online.

According to the City, the scammers were using an old ad. The City originally issued the advertisement in 2016 with the closing date listed as 24 May 2016 – deeming the latest post invalid.
