WATCH: Fists fly during COPE media briefing

A scuffle broke out live on national television during a media briefing held by the Congress of the People (COPE) in Boksburg on Wednesday, 31 August.

Disgruntled party members barged into the briefing and fists started flying. Some had to be escorted out of the room where the briefing was held.

While Mosiuoa Lekota was addressing the media, an unidentified man believed to be a disgruntled party member barged in and could be seen ripping off microphones belonging to various broadcasters who were present.

While other party members are still shocked by that a fist fight ensued in the very same room. Certain members did not want Lekota to address them saying they do not recognise him as he is suspended from the party.

Following the disruption, Lekota emphasised that even though he has been sick for a while, he is still the leader of the party and he is not going anywhere.

This week, the Congress of the People (COPE) placed its founding leader Mosiuoa Lekota on suspension citing lack of energy and strength.

The party’s  deputy president Willie Madisha announced on Monday, 29 August 2022.

During a media briefing, Madisha revealed that the party lacks confidence in Mosiuoa Lekota’s leadership and have repeatedly asked him to rest, which he refused to do.

Madisha said COPE national leadership advised Lekota on several occasions that given his lack of energy and strength to lead the party at the moment, he must step back.

“Although he agreed on all those occasions, he did not do so,” Madisha said.

According to the party’s spokesperson Dennis Bloem, Lekota has been supporting corruption and the removal of elected individuals, something which COPE has strongly condemned.

Bloem added that Lekota could have avoided being suspended had he listened to the party’s advice.

“Mr Lekota could have avoided this situation if he was willing to listen to advise, his deputy president comrade Willie Madisha, the secretary for election comrade, Mzwandile Hleko, and myself spoke to President Lekota and advised him to say that he is no longer the energetic “Terror” Lekota.

“He must consider retiring because his health is also not on his side anymore but Comrade Lekota did not want to listen to this advice.”
