Peru: State of Emergency Extended as Crime Rises

"To extend the state of emergency for the term of 45 calendar days, as of June 18, 2022, declared in Metropolitan Lima of the department of Lima [center] and the Constitutional Province of Callao," a Supreme Decree released in the Official Gazette El Peruano says.

The measure was taken given "the need to continue with operations aimed at reducing criminal actions committed by common crime and organized criminal gangs, to strengthen citizen security."

Under the state of emergency, the National Police of Peru (PNP) maintains control of internal order, although with the support of the Armed Forces.

During the state of emergency, "the constitutional rights relating to the inviolability of the home, freedom of movement within the national territory, freedom of assembly and personal liberty and security are suspended," the decree said.

Using a Supreme Decree, the government extended for 45 more days the state of emergency decreed in Metropolitan Lima and the constitutional province of Callao to combat the increase in crimes and criminal acts; said the measure is in force as of tomorrow, June 18.

On February 2, the government decreed a state of emergency for an initial period of 45 days. It was subsequently extended on March 20 and May 3 to deal with an increase in assaults, homicides, and other crimes that have been taking place since early this year in Lima and Callao.
